Celebrating the Skin You’re In…A body image workshop for mothers and daughters, ages 9-12

Join eating disorder prevention and treatment specialists Juli Hayes-Nadler, RD and Andrea Borgatello, LCSW for a special day with your pre-adolescent daughter to celebrate the changes her body is and will be going through. Both mothers and daughters will learn about how our bodies are each beautifully unique and can not be molded into our cultures “perfect ideal” that our daughters are starting to consider emulating. You will learn about the influences of genetics, metabolism, media and the dangers of dieting.  Moms will get a chance to talk about our own body image histories and the concerns we have about our daughters in this culture that idealizes ultra thinness. Together we will learn to celebrate the skin we’re in!

This event will be held at the beautiful Oak Grove School campus in Ojai, California from 9AM-4PM on Saturday, Oct. 25 for moms and daughters ages 9-10 and on Sunday, October 26 for moms and daughters ages 11-12. There will be a potluck lunch where we will learn and practice mindful or “intuitive eating” together. Both days are expected to fill quickly, so be sure to contact me at www.julhaynad@gmail.com or 805-448-8461 for a registration form as soon as possible. The workshop is $165 per mother-daughter pair with a $20 discount for Oak Grove families.

Celebrating Girls, Honoring Mothers

Our “Celebrating Girls, Honoring Mothers, Strengthening the Connection” workshop at Santa Barbara Yoga Center this past Saturday was a great success and a clear sign that there is a need and a desire for more opportunities for mothers and their pre-adolescent daughters to strengthen their connection with each other before the onset of adolescence. Through myth, ritual, yoga, art, and photography we celebrated this special bond that is passed down from generation to generation. We talked about the need for girls to have the support of their mothers throughout the process of individuation and how this support needs to begin well before our daughters begin this major transition of adolescence. We also reflected on the need for mothers to find support from each other as we try to raise our daughters in a culture that works often against our girls.

Given the great enthusiasm we felt from the mothers and daughters at this special workshop, we have decided to offer a full day retreat in early fall. For more information about this next workshop, feel free to email me at julhaynad@gmail.com or call me at 805-448-8461.

New Group Forming

There will be a new group forming to support and educate mothers with daughters struggling with body image and food issues. This six week group will help you decode “fat talk”, explore the underlying factors that contribute to body dissatisfaction in adolescence, and communicate more effectively about food and body image issues with your daughter. The group will be co-facilitated by myself and Andrea Borgatello, LCSW

Please call or email me for more information about the group!
